Karen Smith
Musician, Playwright, Director, Event Coordinator was born in Brooklyn and based in  Philadelphia.

Karen made the decision to become a full-time independent artist at the start of 2012. In 2013, Karen organized and became the Lead percussionist/ Artistic Director of two artistic ensembles: Sistahs Laying Down Hands and Weez the Peeples, a jazz music ensemble. Sistahs quickly developed into a sought-after multidimensional artistic collective whose performances include vocals, dance and spoken word. Sistahs Laying Down Hands, Laying Hands Down With Love premiered for Second Friday on Lancaster Avenue on August 8, 2014 at the Community Education Center, produced by the Producer's Guild. Sistahs also was part of the opening festivities for the Al Jarreau/David Sanborn Concert Tour on August 21 at the Dell Music Center in Philadelphia. Another notable performance for Sistahs was as one of the featured performers for the Mann Center of Philadelphia's 2016 Summer Camp with special guest, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and this past New Year (2017) for the Kimmel Center.
Karen had the honor of serving in the position of Outbeat Coordinator for America’s First Queer Jazz Festival in September 2014 and the first John Coltrane Jazz Festival in September 2016.
Karen has collaborated with an extensive roster of artists, and has performed for numerous educational institutions and non-profit organizations throughout her career.
